Why Is My Hair Not Growing? Reasons Why Your Hair Is Stubbornly Short
Does your hair refuse to gain length no matter how hard you try to grow it out?
As co-founder of Natural Haircare News I thought I was up on all the current tips for maintaining my natural tresses. But not seeing the growth results on my own kinky curls after an extended period of time left me searching for more answers.
There are reasons why your hair seems to stay at a certain length and not grow longer. The following are some of them.
You trim too often.
Yes. The opposite of not trimming enough can be cause for stunted growth.
Trimming keeps hair healthy and prevents breakage as you grow it out but if done too often, then it will undermine your goal of having longer tresses. Trimming gets rid of unhealthy ends but some believe it should only be done every 3 to 4 months if you want to see growth.
You are not conditioning your hair enough.
Black natural hair needs moisture. We all know this by now. Unconditioned hair is often dry and brittle and prone to hair fallout due to breakage. Keep your hair strong and moisturized by deep conditioning at least once every month and by applying moisturizer as needed.
You may want to experiment to make sure you’re using the right products for your hair type.
Your hair lacks protein.
Protein is basically the building block of your hair. Strands are made up of 70% keratin protein so if hair is stripped of this compound, it loses its strength and structure. Hair tends to lose some of its protein due to regular maintenance like styling or shampooing. Replenish hair protein by conditioning it with a protein-based conditioner.
You have Traction Alopecia due to tight styles.
Traction alopecia is a form of gradual hair loss that is caused by hairstyles that are too tight or that constantly pull at hair follicles. Tight braids, weaves and ponytails can all cause this condition especially when worn often. The damage caused by tugging at hair can be permanent because follicles die. This means hair will no longer grow in some areas of the head particularly at the hairline.
If you are having trouble growing out your hair, perhaps one of the above is the reason why.
