Lavender essential oil, which is also known as Lavendula officinalis, is known worldwide for its relaxing properties which make it very useful for managing the hair loss that develops after going through a stressful event like losing a job or a loved one.
Lavender is also beneficial for persons losing their hair because of heat damage. This is due to the fact that it conditions the hair and prevents it from breaking off.
Lavender aromatherapy oil also promotes hair growth since it has proven anti-inflammatory properties (1). These effects enable it to control inflammation of the hair follicles which causes hair loss when they are replaced by scar tissue.
Lavender can be blended with Mentha piperita or peppermint essential oil which also has anti-inflammatory properties. Peppermint aromatherapy oil also stimulates natural hair growth by increasing the supply of blood and nutrients to the hair follicles.
This lovely lavender and peppermint blend can therefore be used to make natural products for treating hair loss caused by stress, inflammation and heat damage.
Lavender Hair Growth Scalp Massage Oil
A scalp massage oil with lavender and peppermint essential oils is one of the best natural remedies for hair loss. These essential oils should be diluted with jojoba or any other carrier oil that is absorbed by the scalp easily.
To make your own lavender hair growth scalp massage oil, mix the following ingredients in a clean, dark bottle and store it in a cool place.
20 drops lavender essential oil
16 drops peppermint essential oil
3 oz (90 ml) jojoba
Rub this lavender massage oil into your scalp using gentle circular motions with the tips of your fingers at least once a day.
Lavender Hair Growth Pre-Poo Hot Oil Treatment
A pre-poo hot oil treatment with lavender and peppermint essential oils is another awesome natural product for reducing hair loss from heat damaged hair. This pre-poo treatment should be prepared with carrier oils that penetrate the hair shaft like coconut oil or avocado oil.
20 drops lavender essential oil
16 drops peppermint essential oil
3 oz (90 ml) coconut oil
To prepare your own, put the coconut oil in a glass bowl and warm it by placing the bowl in a pan with boiling water. Once it melts and reaches body temperature, remove it from the heat source and add the essential oils.
Massage this lavender hot oil treatment onto your scalp and coat your tresses with it. Cover them with a plastic cap and wrap a towel around your head to give the oils time to work on your scalp and strands. After around 30 minutes, shampoo and condition your hair.
Safety Precautions
Pregnant women should not use peppermint essential oil. They should also avoid using lavender especially during the first trimester.
